HK MP5 DATE CODES
How old is your Heckler & Koch MP5? Learn how to identify its manufacturing year using original HK date codes, production markings and serial numbers.
How to Date Your HK MP5
Heckler & Koch used several methods to identify the production dates of its MP5 submachine guns. Early examples typically feature numerical date stamps, while later production commonly uses a two-letter date code.
Understanding these markings can help collectors determine when an original HK MP5, MP5K or MP5SD was manufactured.
Where Should You Look?
Check the top of the receiver first. Depending on production year and configuration, date markings may also be found on the barrel, bolt head or bolt carrier.
Stocks, trigger housings and other polymer components may carry their own manufacturing date codes. These identify the component, not necessarily the complete firearm.
Early MP5 Date Stamps: 1966–1978
On early MP5s, the production date was often stamped directly in numerical month/year format.
During the transition around 1978–1979, numerical dates, four-digit years and letter codes could all appear on different MP5 examples.
Understanding HK Letter Date Codes
Around 1978–1979, Heckler & Koch introduced a two-letter system in which letters represent the digits of the manufacturing year.
The HK Letter-to-Number System
A = 0 B = 1 C = 2 D = 3 E = 4
F = 5 G = 6 H = 7 I = 8 K = 9
For example, IE represents the digits 84, indicating 1984 on an MP5 from that period.
Important: The letter J also appears as a 9 on certain original MP5 components, and several non-standard combinations are documented. The code must always be interpreted in its historical context.

Designed for documented HK MP5 markings. The same code may represent different centuries, and not every component follows the standard pattern.
Common MP5 Date Codes
The following reference examples cover some frequently encountered manufacturing years.
| Date Code | Year | Period |
|---|---|---|
| HI | 1978 | Early codes |
| HK | 1979 | Early codes |
| IA | 1980 | 1980s |
| IB | 1981 | 1980s |
| IC | 1982 | 1980s |
| ID | 1983 | 1980s |
| IE | 1984 | 1980s |
| IF | 1985 | 1980s |
| IG | 1986 | 1980s |
| IH | 1987 | 1980s |
| II | 1988 | 1980s |
| IK | 1989 | 1980s |
| JA | 1990 | Barrel example |
| KB | 1991 | 1990s |
| KC | 1992 | 1990s |
| IR | 1993 | Exception |
| IS | 1995 | Exception |
| IO | 1997 | Exception |
| OR | 2000 | Exception |
| NP | 2001 | Exception |
| AD | 2003 | 2000s |
| CE | 2024 | Modern example |
These are documented examples, not a complete factory production register. Some codes are component-specific, and unusual markings require additional verification.
What About MP5 Serial Numbers?
Serial numbers can provide useful historical context, particularly when a date code is missing. However, they should not be treated as a precise manufacturing-year decoder on their own.
Common Original MP5 Serial Formats
1966 to approximately 1978
Five-digit serial numbers,
generally without a prefix.
Approximately 1976 to 1992
Six-digit serial numbers with
a C prefix.
From approximately 1988
Six-digit serial numbers with
a 62 prefix.
These systems overlapped during transitions. Special contracts and national variants may also use different numbering formats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the date code on an HK MP5?
Often on top of the receiver. Depending on the variant and year, markings may also be present on the barrel or bolt components.
What does HK mean as a date code?
When used as a two-letter date marking, HK represents 79, corresponding to 1979. It should not automatically be confused with the HK manufacturer name.
Does the stock date code tell me when my MP5 was made?
Not necessarily. The stock may have been produced at a different time or replaced during service. Polymer codes identify the individual component.
Why does my MP5 have no date code?
Some original MP5s lack visible receiver date markings. Checking other original components, documentation and serial-number history may help establish the production period.
Can an MP5 serial number reveal the exact manufacturing year?
Not reliably by itself. Serial-number ranges can help estimate the production period, but date markings and factory records offer stronger evidence.
